It’s time for a proper marine garage door for your boathouse—it’s what your boat deserves

Today, there are tons of marine garage doors available. Choosing the right one starts with thinking about the main function of the door.

Are you looking to protect your boat from the elements as well as prying eyes? Or do you want to display your boat in a modern boathouse with all-glass garage doors? Perhaps you’re more focused on finding a garage door that offers good performance for the cost. This blog will cover them all.

Check out this beauty of a boathouse from Houzz. The charcoal siding blends well with the black frames of the all-glass garage doors, creating a modern, upscale look with a terrasse that’s like nothing you’ve seen before—this isn’t your grandfather’s boathouse.

There’s usually one big hesitation to the all-glass garage door: all that glass could lead to accidents.

What if someone isn’t paying attention and drives right into the closed garage door? You certainly don’t want the all-glass garage door to cause injuries! Fortunately, for safety’s sake, these doors come in tempered glass instead of traditional glass.

Tempered glass has been heated and cooled multiple times to create a strength that is 4 to 5 times that of traditional glass. If there’s an impact that breaks the glass, it is designed to shatter into thousands of tiny pieces that are completely harmless.

California, 6' x 8' 6" and 16' x 8' 6", Black aluminum frame, Sandblasted glass

Check out these full-view California garage doors, measuring 6' x 8'6" and 16' x 8'6", featuring Sandblasted glass and a black aluminum frame.

There are multiple glass options for our California full-view garage door. The most popular include:

  • Clear glass is perfect for showing off your boat, as well as for enjoying the natural light and seeing out of the boathouse from the inside.
  • Sandblasted glass also gives you natural light, but it adds privacy for those who don’t want people seeing inside the boathouse. If yours is used for storage or attached to the home, you might not want it to be on display.
  • Tempered glass, as mentioned, is 4-5 times stronger than traditional glass. It can be added to all styles, except laminated glass.
  • Polycarbonate is plastic alternative, and it’s more impact resistant. It may get scratched, but when properly cared for, polycarbonate windows are a great choice. Read this FAQ about care and maintenance for these windows.

Don’t forget that condensation could be an issue with California garage doors, as with any larger window. You’ll want to regularly clean and maintain the garage door since you can’t rely on a dehumidifier in this space. Regular maintenance and inspections will ensure the seals are tight and the door is weatherproof. Consider opening the door to circulate air and get the dampness out of the boathouse.

Option 2 > Choose the stylish Craftsman look with durable steel construction with a Townships Collection garage door

Here’s another great design found on Pinterest. This farmhouse style overhead door offers a wood-like appearance and durable marine construction, and is one of the most popular doors for boathouses, from the Townships Collection.

Perhaps instead of glass, you like the idea of wood? But with a marine garage door, can you get that? With the overhead door selection from our Townships Collection, you can get that and any other features that you want.

Don’t forget to upgrade to Dura+ hardware for marine doors!

Standard hardware has no place in the boathouse—the exposure to moisture (and salt, in some cases) means that rusting and corrosion are much more likely. With the Dura+ collection, doors can have nylon-covered rollers and a sturdy galvanized steel track system. All this means the door will last longer, need less maintenance, and live up to the needs of your boathouse.

Option 3 > Regal and Acadia 138 garage doors, for those who want good value for the performance

There have been plenty of tempting options already, but what if you’re thinking of something more budget-friendly? For an overhead door that costs a little less, you also have plenty of choices. To get a better idea, you can check out this FAQ about garage doors and what their main cost factors are.

We’ve got two selections here:

1. The Acadia 138 garage door

This garage door is an Acadia 138 North Hatley LP, 9' x 7', Desert Sand, windows with Richmond Inserts. Imagine this one on your boathouse! Wouldn’t the look be absolutely divine?

First, we have our Acadia 138 North Hatley LP, 9' x 7', featuring decorative hardware and Richmond inserts in the windows, in a Desert Sand finish. Imagine this one on your boathouse! You’d be the talk of the town!

The Acadia 138 features R-12 insulation and galvanized steel construction. The model typically comes with traditional hardware, so you’ll have to ask for the upgrade to Dura+ hardware. It will have an extra charge with the Acadia 138, but it’s worth it if you love this door.

2. The Regal garage door

Regal Classic Long, 9' x 7', Moka Brown, Clear windows

Look at the Regal Classic Long, 9' x 7', featured in rich deep brown with clear windows. The traditional design is embossed for a timeless look that’s also great on a boathouse.

The Regal garage doors collection offers non-insulated or polystyrene insulated doors, which makes them more affordable. If you’re not worried about the cold air getting into the boathouse, it could be a great fit!

What if you’ve got a small boat?

Perhaps you need the marine door to be pretty small, so that you can build a boathouse for a bass boat. We custom-make every door, ranging in sizes from 4’wide up to 20’wide, as well as various heights. You’ll get the perfect garage door for your boathouse.

Does your boathouse need a garage door opener?

You’ve probably found the perfect marine door for the boathouse by now. But would it be better with an electric garage door opener?

Not everyone will consider a garage door opener an essential part of their boathouse. It’s great for being able to open the door without hassle and get in and out without even having to do more than push a button. No one wants to fall in the water trying to manually open a door—it might be a funny memory, but it won’t be fun at the time. Fortunately, Liftmaster has openers that will make it all easy.

The boathouse needs a door opener that is durable and able to stand the test of time. Residential opener systems are fine, but they may not be strong enough. And, when you choose our two commercial door openers, they also have a special feature you don’t find in residential door openers: a car wash modification.

This modification gives you a door opener that is water resistant and that operates without incident, even in the damp environment of the boathouse. Of course, only certain models of our industrial garage door openers are outfitted for the Car Wash modification.

The LiftMaster H and LiftMaster J garage door openers can be installed along the wall instead of overhead, reducing noise and vibrations, as well as freeing up ceiling space. That can come in handy for those who raise their boats during the storage months.

A wall-mounted garage door opener can be a great option if you plan on lifting your boats when you store them. It will save you some ceiling space. Image from Houzz.

Your beloved boat will be protected with your Liftmaster garage door opener

Concerned about break-ins or theft? LiftMaster has garage door openers that ensure this doesn’t happen. They have several features for security and safety, including things to protect your family as well as your boat and your brand-new garage door. Some of the best features include:

  • Code scrambling: The garage door opener sends a new code every single time the door is opened or closed. That means that someone with a universal remote won’t be able to get into your boathouse.
  • Invisible light beams: These beams are designed for safety. If something crosses the photelectric beams, the marine door will stop and the door opener will reverse the door back to the open position to prevent it from closing on something or worse, someone.
  • Optional camera: If you want to be sure that you always know what’s going on in your boathouse, cameras can be added.
  • MyQ App: Always know what’s going on with your garage door with the MyQ app, which lets you monitor and manage your garage door from anywhere. You can even get a notification when the marine door is left opened for long periods of time, saving you the worry.
  • Even more features can be found on LiftMaster door openers!
