Renovating Your Garage Can Add to the Resale Value of Your Home

Looking for a way to improve the resale value of your home? It could be as simple as enhancing the inside and outside appearance of your garage. Not sure why that is the case, or how to go about doing it? Let’s explore the topic.

Why garage renovations improve resale value

One of the primary factors in whether a home is purchased or not is its exterior appearance – the façade. Given the fact that the garage door makes up between 25% and 40% of the façade, it stands to reason that it can have a major impact on the value of your home, and whether anyone wants to purchase it.

Your garage door is responsible for a great deal of the first impression a potential buyer has of the property. However, the interior of the garage also has an impact. So, how do you go about changing things? It’s not all that difficult.

  1. Remodel – Is your garage unfinished? Is it showing signs of age and wear? A little TLC here can go a long way. Add some sheetrock and paint if the garage isn’t completely finished. If the concrete floor’s paint is peeling up, repaint it. Add a bit of lighting here and there to make the garage more attractive.
  2. Paint It – In addition to painting the floor, you’ll want to consider painting the walls, doors and doorways that lead into your garage. Opt for a light color to make it look bright and new.
  3. Declutter – If your garage is being used for storage, it can make it difficult for a potential buyer to envision themselves in the home. Take a bit of time to declutter. You can have a yard sale, or you can donate items to Goodwill or another charity. You can move other items to your storage shed, or into the attic if necessary. While you’re at it, hang some of your items from the walls – your bikes and sports items are great examples). This will open up floor space and make the entire garage feel much more spacious.
  4. Check the Operation of the Garage Door – If your garage door creaks and groans or rattles when it opens and closes, it’s a good sign that it needs some maintenance. It’s also going to scare off potential buyers. Invest in a garage door tune up to make sure that the door is working the way it should.
  5. Replace That Garage Door – If your garage door is particularly old, or showing lots of wear and tear, it might be time to replace it. Modern garage doors are quite affordable, and there are many styles on offer to help you get the look and feel you want for your home.
